The Melrose School Public Speaking Day
The Melrose School celebrated Public Speaking Day on Thursday, February 12, in the school gym. Part of the Language Arts Program, this annual event requires students in Kindergarten through Grade 8 to write and present speeches to their respective classes. At least two students from each grade were selected to present their speeches at the all-school assembly on the 12th. Some will be invited to speak again at the 4-H Public Presentations Program at Green Chimneys in Brewster on Saturday, March 7.
Speech topics differed for each grade. This year, Kindergarten students spoke about something they loved; Grade 1, a favorite place; Grade 2, a favorite person, place, or thing; Grade 3, a hero; and Grade 4, someone special. Grade 5 students selected poems or famous speeches to practice the art of recitation. Grade 6 students gave “how to” speeches, while Grade 7 presented persuasive speeches and Grade 8, informational speeches. Language Arts Teachers Lynn Smierciak and Jenny Lazarro coordinated speeches for grades 5 through 8.
